HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE #3:

Dibucaine ointment. This is the one thing I absolutely demand in my hospital bag. I’ve had stitches with 2 of my 3 babies and it’s absolute magic.

Here’s why you NEED dibucaine ointment:

  • It’ll keep any stitches from pulling
  • It will help your skin not stick to your pad
  • It’s a topical anesthetic and will help with the pain, so use it even if you don’t need stitches.
  • It lasts longer than the Dermoplast spray

Basically, you squeeze a thin strip out on a Tuck’s pad and then do just that (tuck it) to your poor mangled lady-parts. You can also lay it on your sanitary pad, but it tends to move around more and isn’t as effective.

Nupercainal is typically used for hemorrhoid relief, but Preparation H isn’t the same thing. You’ll want to shell out a few more dollars and get the good stuff. Nupercainal was as close as we could find to the dibucaine ointment I was given with my first baby and it worked.

BONUS TIP:

When I had my third baby, the hospital didn’t provide me any Tucks pads because I didn’t need stitches. The cool witch hazel feels amazing on swollen and tender areas. If you’d like some witch hazel pads you might want to take your own.

HOSPITAL BAG MUST-HAVE#4:

Bathrobe.  You’ll want a nice soft robe at home for the first few days, or months, after baby comes. If you do end up in the NICU, you’ll probably be out of bed more than you think to spend time with your babe.  Wrapping up in a blanket ties up your hands when they have far more important things to do.

I like a nice plush robe that’s perfect for snuggling. And you’ll use it for all those middle of the night wakings to come. It’s a good investment, you won’t regret it.

What to pack in a hospital bagDepending what time of year you have you baby, you can decide if you want a lightweight robe or one that’s heavier. I love my fleece plush robe and I’d rather be too warm than cold, so that works well for me. If you get warm easily and it’s uncomfortable for you, choose a lightweight option. And if you’re tall, look for a long robe option if it’s important to you.

I'm Krista. Ringleader here on While He Was Napping, wife to my handsome Mr. Right & momma to my THREE energetic boys, Big J (9), Little J (6) & Little N (4). We FINALLY added a beautiful little girl to our family last December.

I’m knee-deep in Tonka trucks & Thomas trains. I survive our crazy days with Vanilla Coke, Sonic slushies, sweet snuggles and little giggles. When I tuck them in tight & kiss them good night, I get a little time to create & just be me.
