{Friday Favorites} Stress Relievers

Yeah, I know it’s Monday. But the Friday Favorites I was going to do last week got lost in the bustle of the week and didn’t get put together until… uhm, Saturday?  Yeah.  I think.

Today’s faves are all about stealing a few minutes for yourself.  Whether it’s school, work, home, the kids or a combination of those and more that are fighting for your time, it is important to take a step back and take care of yourself.  Sometimes, a bubble bath, pedicure, 20 minutes of reading for pleasure, or just eating a bag of chocolate covered pretzels by yourself while you’re hiding in the bathroom can do wonders for you.  Stress relievers are a must-have weapon in your arsenal for those crazy, hectic days.  Here’s my favorite methods.

My favorite ways to relax are:
1. Making Cards.  This is my guilty craft.  It’s not something I do for my blog.  I don’t have to worry about taking photos as I create and I don’t have to take final photos.  I don’t have to spend hours editing the photos or writing the post.  This is just for me.

2. Hot Bubble Bath with an episode of my current favorite Netflix show… pretty much anything that isn’t animated.
3. Manicure or pedicure.  I do them myself, which mean they take time.  I don’t often have time to sit and literally watch paint dry.  They are a rare treat.

4. Chick flick.  My awesome hubby puts up with the occasional romantic comedy, but sometimes you just need to binge on popcorn, chocolate and a gooey love story.  Even when I’m watching TV with Mr Napping, I rarely don’t have something else going on too – folding laundry, editing photos, writing posts.  It drives my poor husband bonkers.  Just sitting and watching is a rarity.
5. Reading a book that isn’t a board book, have “lift the flap”s or sounds, and doesn’t end every other sentence with a rhyme.  Decent plot lines and character development are also nice.  Or glossy pages.

The magazines I will read ‘some day’…

6. Eating my own food.  Apparently, whenever I put food on my plate, it has some sort of magic spell placed on it and tastes so much better than the food on my children’s plates.  It came out of the same pot, has the same ingredients and, to anyone else in the world, is the same thing my kids have.  But, to them, it has a mystical quality that they must have.  It’s a fabulous thing when I get to actually eat the food on my plate all by myself.
7. Playing a Board or Card Game.  It’s so nice to focus on something that doesn’t really matter for a little while.  However, this isn’t really a solo stress reliever so I have to find a buddy, or several, to play with.
8. Listening to music.  Even if I have to do some mundane task while I listen, it gives me the chance to just let my mind wander.  I can go just about anywhere and not have to worry about packing a diaper bag, juggling children, or other people finding my kid’s temper tantrum in the toy aisle or on the swings to be “annoying”.
9. Sitting in the sunshine.  Just sitting and doing nothing.
10. A new hair cut and color.  The biggest sacrifice here is the time.  I do my own and each new do costs me about $8.  The $100 savings alone is enough to make me feel all good about myself, but who doesn’t love a new look every so often.

What are your favorite stress-relievers?

Rice “Kiss Me” Treats

Need something fun to do with the kids today.  How about these fun Valentine treats (actually, you could make them whenever…)?  Who doesn’t love rice crispy treats?  They are quick, easy and tasty.  Perfect for kids to help out with.  Gotta love a super simple and pretty basic treat.  I’m sure you’ve seen the rice crispy treats that are shaped like Hershey’s Kisses floating around the last month or so.  Here’s my take on this adorable little treat.

RICE “KISS ME” TREATS

Ingredients:
– 6 cups of crispy rice cereal
– 1 bag of regular-size marshmallows or about 4 1/3 cups mini marshmallows
– 3 Tbsp butter
– almond bark or baker’s dipping chocolate

Directions:
– Melt the butter in a large pot on the stove over medium to medium-high heat.
– Add the marshmallows to the pot and melt.  (So, here’s my confession: I totally ruined the first batch of these.  How do you mess up rice crispy treats, right?  Well, I was using old marshmallows and I think the problem was that they started to burn before they ever melted.  So, I was left with a huge, sticky, charred messy, half-melted glob.  That was lots of fun to scrub off my pot).  Use fresh marshmallows!
– Remove from heat and stir in your crispy rice cereal until it’s evenly coated with the sticky marshmallows.
– Shape into cylindrical pyramids or Hershey Kiss shapes (hmm, look at that, 5th grade geometry at it’s finest).  Allow to stand for 1-2 hours on a sheet of wax paper at room temperature or until solid.  You don’t want them to fall apart when you handle them.

– Melt your almond bark or baker’s dipping chocolate in the microwave as per the package instructions.  Dip each cylindrical pyramid in to the chocolate and coat evenly.  I found using a skewer stabbed through the bottom of the rice crispy seemed to work the best.  Set back on the wax paper and let the chocolate harden.

Those are fun, but this extra step will add the perfect personalized touch I just love.
– Cut a square of aluminium foil that will fit around your “rice kiss me”s.
– Cut a thin strip of paper and write your own little love notes, Valentine message or whatever you want on it.  You could type it up and print it if you’re making a large batch.
– Place one of your strips of paper and a “kiss me” treat in the center of the foil square.  Wrap up like a Kiss with the paper sticking out the top.

Makes approximately 24 two-inch “kiss me” treats/
Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Vanilla Cinnamon Pancakes

I actually made a menu about a week and a half ago and we’ve actually stuck to it pretty well since then.  This isn’t such a rare occurrence when I’m not the size of a small walrus; but, lately, we’ve struggled.  And my poor husband has come home from working all day to have to make dinner because I am just so incredibly exhausted.  My justification is that he still sleeps all night long and I toss and turn from side to side every hour.  Ever tried to roll over a beach ball before?  Or tried to roll over with a stack of bricks strapped to your abdomen?  That’s about what it feels like, pinky promise.

Anyway, when I glanced at the clock and realized, “hmmm, 5:30… I should probably make something for dinner” I was thinking something quick and easy.  I took another glance at our menu and it had meals like crock pot roast, Idaho tacos, and yellow rice and chicken.  Whoops.  Missed the roast by like eight hours, Idaho tacos require baked potatoes – definitely not quick, and we’d had rice the two previous nights.  Then “pancakes, eggs and bacon” caught my eye.  Decision made.  Until I couldn’t find anymore pancake batter mix in the cupboard.  So much for easy…  I had to look up a recipe.  I got the basics off allrecipes.com (this is the recipe I worked from), but the tweaks are what really made them super tasty.

VANILLA CINNAMON PANCAKES

Ingredients:
– 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 tbsp sugar
– 1 tsp salt
– 2 tsp imitation vanilla or 1 tsp of the real stuff (or to taste)
– 2 tsp baking soda
– 1 cup cinnamon chips (found with the chocolate chips at most grocery stores).  You can substitute 1/2 tsp of ground cinnamon, but the chips are sweeter and, thus, make a sweeter pancake.
– 2 cups milk

Directions:
– In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar, salt and soda together.
– Add the milk and vanilla.  Mix until batter forms.
– Add the cinnamon chips and fold into the batter.
– On the stove or a griddle, use a medium to medium-low setting (depending on your appliance).  Lightly spread butter in the pan or on the griddle to prevent sticking.
– Use a ladle to spoon batter onto griddle (or into frying pan) in approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inch circles.  Flip with a spatula turner when bubbles begin to form in the batter and the bottom is golden brown – about 6-8 minutes.  Cook until batter has baked all the way through – about another 6-8 minutes.
– Remove from heat and store under a clean kitchen towel or in the griddle’s drawer to keep warm.
– Repeat the last two steps until all the batter has been cooked.  Serve warm.

Servings: Approximately twelve 2 inch pancakes
Store leftovers in airtight container in fridge.

{Creative Home Keeper} Mom’s Special Memories

It’s time for another contributor post!  This time, Victoria from Creative Home Keeper is here and she has an awesome idea to share, complete with free printable!  It’s super fantastic, so let’s just get right to it…

MSM printable
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not super crafty. The thought of glitter, glue, paint, and felt pom-poms just stresses me out. Despite spending a ton of time on Pinterest pinning adorable DIY crafts, I really have no intention of making most of what I pin. I wish it were different, I wish I were a bit more crafty, but I’m not. It’s not in my personality, it’s not true to who I am.
I used to feel guilty that my kids would be missing out too. They would miss out on elaborate scrapbooks filled with adorable pictures and stencils that document their childhood. They would miss out on handmade quilts made from their favorite baby clothes. I used to ask myself the question, “How would I be able to preserve my children’s memories if I’m not crafty?”
Then I realized that, while I’m not crafty in the traditional sense, I do have another gift that I am passionate about- the gift of words. One area that is true to my personality and gifts is writing. I love to write. Back when I was pregnant with my first child, I started to record my pregnancy progress into a small notebook that quickly turned into a memory journal for my son filled with stories from my pregnancy, his birth, the first few months, and letters I wrote to him sharing my prayers for him. Some moms keep a traditional baby book for their children, I keep a journal. But I started to record important dates on random sheets of notebook paper because it always seemed like I never had my memory journals near by.
So I created a Mom’s Special Memories sheet to record all of those thoughts, memories, and special moments that happened everyday. I keep a copy of my Special Memories sheet for each child in my home management binder, which is always on my kitchen counter. Whenever I want to record a special memory, event, adorable phrase they said, or other highlight from our days, I simply jot it down on the Special Memories sheet. It serves as a catch-all for all those every day moments that are precious. I record them here on the Special Memories sheet so that way when I have the time to transfer the memories to their baby book’s or journals, I won’t forget them.
Mom's special memories

I set up the sheet to serve not only as a place to record those everyday moments, but also to be able to keep as a keepsake too.

  • I print off the two sheets front to back and 3 hole punch so I can place it into any 3 ring binder
  • At the top of the first sheet, there is a place to record the child’s name, age and year
  • There is also blank space on the first page to place a picture of the child, have the child draw a picture, place a hand print, or any other special memorabilia from that year.
  • There are three spaces to record things the child loved, sweet words or phrases they said, and humorous accounts of things they did.
Once every few months I pull out my Mom’s Special Memories sheet and transfer those precious moments over into their journals. Once the sheet is filled, I also like to keep the sheet in a separate 3 ring binder I have designated for art projects or other import papers I keep for each child. mom's special memories binder

I’m thrilled to be sharing my keepsake printable with you today. Hopefully it serves as a place to gather all of those special everyday moments that you don’t want to forget but don’t have the time to stop and pull out the baby book.

How much do you just love that?!  Isn’t that a great idea.  While I do enjoy scrapbooking, I don’t have the time, or budget, to create elaborate scrapbook pages for my kids.  I use my Calendar Journal a lot like Victoria uses her awesome binder.  I absolutely adore a spot for photos.  Thank you so much for sharing, Victoria.  Go check out all the awesomness that is over at Creative Home Keeper.
