My secret is this: All hospitals are different. I know, I know. You’re thinking, “Of course they are!” But, I didn’t realize just how different they could be or what that would mean for me and my labor and delivery experience.
You see, our second hospital stay was absolutely and completely miserable and that was motivation enough to go extra prepared when I had my third baby! There is ABSOLUTELY a reason – it’s called experience – that every one of the things on my list is there. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
The best part of my second childbirth was labor and delivery. I’m not joking even a little bit. My favorite parts of my second son’s birth were grueling contractions and incredible pain. How sad is that?!
When I had my first baby, the hospital had all kinds of swag for me – those awesome water mugs, a plethora of maxi pads and personal care items you only ever hope to use after childbirth, blankets for the baby, cute hats, pacifiers, and they even took the baby to the nursery and gave my husband an extra towel so he could help me shower before we went home.
Being my first baby, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to get all that! I had one less than pleasant nurse, but everything else put that on a very short list of bad experiences. I expected the same with my second baby. That DID NOT happen!
Between my oldest two, we moved out of state, and to a new hospital. The items my first hospital provided without a bat of an eyelash were conspicuously absent at our new hospital. It was frustrating to ask for things and constantly be denied.
When it came time to have my third baby at the same hospital I had my second at, I decided I was going to take the things I wanted. I wasn’t going to hope the hospital would take care of me. I was going to to take care of me and my baby.
